Following up on the new «Clean up» feature introduced earlier to DiskDigger for Android, I’m happy to introduce another brand new feature that adds a related capability: wiping free space. This is useful for ensuring that your deleted files (which are now considered free space in your device’s memory) will no longer be recoverable, even with tools like DiskDigger.

The new «Wipe free space» feature can be accessed directly from the main screen of the DiskDigger app (underneath the selections of Basic Scan and Full Scan). It can also be accessed while performing a Full Scan by tapping the «Clean up» button.

Like the «Clean up» feature, the «Wipe free space» feature is still a bit experimental, so you should be aware of some of its caveats and limitations:

  • Wiping of free space is done by creating a temporary file and filling it with random data, until it consumes the entire amount of free space on your device. When the temporary file begins to reach the limit of free space, the Android system will usually display a notification that your available space is running out. You should ignore this notification until the wipe process is complete. When it finishes, it will delete the temporary file and free up the remaining space again.
  • It is possible that the Android system will stop DiskDigger from being able to write to the temporary file before the memory is completely full. This means that there is a possibility that not all of the free space will be wiped, and some deleted data might still be recoverable. You can always re-run DiskDigger and scan your device’s memory to ensure whether the wipe was successful.
  • The wiping is done only on the internal memory of the device. The ability to wipe an external SD card will be added in a future version.
  • It’s important to note that because the wiping is done by overwriting all the free space, it means that the process inflicts a significant amount of wear on the device’s memory. This can potentially shorten the life span of the memory, and should be performed sparingly, and only when necessary.

These clean-up features are currently available only in the Android version of DiskDigger, but are currently in development for the Windows version, too. As always, for all your data recovery needs, download DiskDigger for Windows, or DiskDigger for Android!

Saving locally

The second option allows you to save the recoverable files back to the local device (to the internal memory or SD card of the same device from which the files are being recovered).

Saving on Android 5 (Lollipop) and above

This will take you to the standard Android folder picker that you can use to select the folder into which the files will be saved. Unfortunately the standard picker can be a bit difficult to use for the first time. If you see an empty screen with an «Open from» title like in the screenshots below, then follow these steps:

  • Swipe away the «Open from» panel to the left.
  • Tap the overflow menu (three dots) in the top right corner, and select «Show SD card» or «Show internal memory».
  • Tap the navigation menu (three lines in the top left corner, and you should now be able to pick the SD card or Internal memory, and navigate to the exact location where you want to save the files.

Saving on Android 4.4 (Kitkat) and below

You will be prompted to select the directory where the file(s) will be saved. The directory defaults to the location of the memory card on your device (most commonly «»). The directory picker allows you to navigate through the directory structure of your device:

Important note: You should use this method only if you can save the files onto a different partition than the one from which the files are recovered. For example, if you’re recovering files from internal memory, you should save the files onto an external SD card (not internal memory).  It is not recommended to save the files onto the same partition from which they were recovered, because that would risk permanently overwriting the very same files that are being recovered!  You should attempt to use one of the other methods of saving the files (save to another app or FTP upload) before resorting to saving locally.

This month brings several exciting new features and enhancements to DiskDigger for Windows:

  • Support for recovering FITS images (Flexible Image Transport System) in «Dig Deeper» mode. FITS is the image format used in astronomy, and is endorsed by NASA and the International Astronomical Union. This type of file can contain many different types of data besides actual images, and DiskDigger can now recover all of them.
  • Support for recovering SER videos, which is a video format used in astronomical imaging.
  • Support for recovering AAX (Audible Enhanced Audio) files, which is the DRM-protected audio format used by Audible.
  • Support for recovering DjVu (.DJVU) documents.
  • Improved detection of corrupted partitions on a GUID partition table (GPT).

And of course there are a few minor enhancements to DiskDigger for Android, which include optimized performance on older devices, as well as improvements to Clean Up mode.

This month brings more exciting updates to DiskDigger for Windows! Here are the highlights from the latest version:

  • Improved and expanded support for undeleting files from exFAT partitions. Many modern flash drives and memory cards that have a capacity greater than 32GB are formatted with the exFAT filesystem, and DiskDigger is more prepared than ever to help you recover your files from these drives.
  • Improved performance when undeleting files from NTFS partitions (the program should no longer get stuck for a short period while scanning the MFT).
  • Fixed a few issues when undeleting from FAT32 and FAT16 partitions.
  • Improved support for detecting EFI partition tables, in addition to MBR.
  • In «dig deep» mode, you can now view each file’s creation date and last-modified date, and sort the files by these columns.
  • Improved detection and recovery of .SQLITE databases in «dig deeper» mode.

  • What versions of Windows does DiskDigger run on?

    • DiskDigger will run on Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7 (32 and 64-bit), Windows Vista (32 and 64-bit), and Windows XP.

  • Does it run on Mac and/or Linux?

    It sure does. Here are guides to get it running on Linux and Mac OS X.

  • How do I install it?

    There is nothing to install. After downloading the Zip file, extract DiskDigger.exe and run it!

  • I’m running Windows XP, and nothing happens when I launch DiskDigger.

    Make sure that you have .NET version 4.0 installed.  You can download .NET from Microsoft.

  • The program shows the error «The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135)» when trying to run it.

    DiskDigger requires the Microsoft .NET Framework to be installed on your computer. Newer versions of Windows (Vista and above) have .NET installed by default, but some installations of Windows XP may not have it installed.  You can download .NET from Microsoft.

  • Is DiskDigger free?

    When using it in Windows, DiskDigger is free for downloading, scanning your disk, and previewing any recoverable files. However, when saving the recoverable files, the program strongly encourages you to purchase a personal license. To use the program for commercial purposes, you must purchase a commercial license. (When using DiskDigger in Linux, it’s completely free.)

  • What’s the benefit of purchasing a license key?

    Without a license key, DiskDigger will pop up an annoying message box that gently reminds you to purchase a key. It does, of course, allow you to continue without a key, and even proceeds to recover your files.  However, it will keep popping up the message box for every file you’re trying to recover.  So just buy a license key already!  It’s a lot less expensive than comparable utilities out there.

  • But I don’t feel like purchasing a license key. Can you convince me?

    OK, fine. Think about this for a second: how much are your lost files worth to you? Whether it’s your family’s vacation photos, your Master’s thesis, or that footage you took of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal, each of these things has intrinsic value (or else you wouldn’t be trying to recover it!). So then, let’s convert that intrinsic value into a meaningful way for you to say «Thank you» for getting your files back.  Aren’t your lost files worth the equivalent of a couple beers at the pub?  Well then, think of purchasing a license key as buying me a drink or two.  Keep in mind that similar utilities cost way more than what I’m asking, and probably do a lot less.

  • When does a license key expire?

    The license key will expire with the next major release of the program. Minor releases and updates to the current version will continue to work with the same license key.  Rest assured, the next major release probably won’t occur for a long while, and I’ll give notifications well in advance of a major release, so there is no need to worry that a license key will expire without warning.

  • But aren’t there utilities out there that do this kind of stuff for free?

    Technically, yes.  But DiskDigger is more powerful, more intuitive, and generally better than the completely free tools (as well as most, if not all, paid tools).  If you feel that it’s not, I would love to hear why!

  • How do I uninstall it?

    Just delete the executable file (DiskDigger.exe). There’s nothing else to uninstall!  If you have purchased a license key, you can delete it from your computer by clicking on the «About» button in the program, then clicking the «Delete license» button.

  • I have purchased a license, but haven’t received it in my email!
  • Is it possible to get a refund after purchasing a license key?

    You may request a refund up to thirty (30) days after purchase.

  • Does the program «phone home» for any reason?

    DiskDigger does not send any analytics or telemetry data. It only connects to the Internet for verifying your license key (if you choose to purchase one), or if you click the «Check for updates» button in the About box. Now stop worrying.

Just a quick but important update to DiskDigger for Windows:

  • Improved ability to recover compressed files in NTFS volumes. Compressed recoverable files will be automatically uncompressed when recovered.
  • Added support for detecting PostScript (.PS) and Encapsulated PostScript (.EPS) files in Dig Deeper mode.
  • Improved detection of old IBM PC-DOS partitions.
  • The list of scannable disks now lists the drive letter(s) currently mapped to that disk.
  • Improved saving and restoring of sessions, for pausing and resuming long-running scans.

I’m happy to announce some exciting new features in DiskDigger for Windows, as well as in DiskDigger for Android!
Let’s go over the Windows version first:

  • «Dig Deep» mode has been enhanced with an option to show either «Deleted files only» (which was the previous default behavior) or «Deleted and existing files.» This is useful when the disk is improperly formatted or partitioned (or if the partition area is damaged), but the file system itself is still healthy.  When you insert the disk and Windows shows an error such as «You need to format the disk before you can use it,» it’s an indication of this kind of issue.  DiskDigger will now let you recover all the files from such a disk, whether or not they were actually deleted within the file system.
  • In «Dig Deep» mode, there is now improved support for scanning certain file systems that are not native to Windows, including HFS+ (used in macOS disks) and ext4 (used in Linux).
  • Enhanced support for scanning optical disks (CDs and DVDs) and the file systems that they contain, including ISO 9660 and UDF.  There is also improved support for scanning damaged or improperly-burned disks:  When selecting the drive to scan, you can go to the Advanced tab and check the «Detect disk size manually» box, which will make DiskDigger ignore the size of the disk as reported by the driver, and instead read the disk explicitly until it can no longer be read.

And here is what’s new in the Android version of DiskDigger:

  • Support for recovering Opus audio files (when scanning rooted devices). The Opus format is used by WhatsApp for saving audio messages, which means that you can now recover WhatsApp voice notes.  This format is also often used for ringtones and by other media recording apps.
  • At last, you can now preview recoverable video and audio files, in place, without having to recover them first! (Previously only photos could be previewed.)  Tap the «play» icon next to each recoverable file to show the preview dialog, then use the playback controls to play, pause, rewind, etc.  (Note that this feature is only available on Android Marshmallow (6.0) and above.)

Just a quick (but substantial) update to DiskDigger for Windows! Here’s what’s new in the latest version:

  • Improved scanning of disk images (.VHD, .VDI, and raw disk images).
  • Better workflow for saving and restoring sessions when using Dig Deeper mode: the «Restore session» button now appears in the Advanced tab when selecting the types of files to recover. Once you select the session to restore, DiskDigger will resume scanning from where the session left off.
  • Improved recovery logic for FAT32 and exFAT partitions when using Dig Deep mode.
  • Improved user interface for right-to-left languages, such as Hebrew and Arabic.

DiskDigger for Android no longer requires rooting! (with caveats)

Huge news! The DiskDigger app for Android no longer requires the device to be rooted. To be more precise, the app will still work better on rooted devices (it will scan more thoroughly, and rooting is still recommended), but it now has basic functionality to recover photos even on regular non-rooted devices!

If your device is not rooted, DiskDigger will now perform an exhaustive scan of the various caches that your device maintains. These caches often contain lower-resolution versions of the photos on your device. When one of the original photos is deleted, the cached version does not get deleted, allowing DiskDigger to find and recover it for you. This means that, on non-rooted devices, DiskDigger will generally recover lower-resolution versions of your deleted photos. This is a limitation that cannot be overcome at this time (or without rooting).

Of course, if your device is rooted, DiskDigger will continue to perform as it has been, scanning the entirety of your device’s memory for all traces of photos and other types of files.

The app has also been updated to fully support Android Marshmallow (6.0). So, what are you waiting for? Install DiskDigger on your Android device, and see what it can recover!

На смартфонах и планшетах восстановить фото после удаления, как и установить переадресацию вызовов, можно буквально в несколько кликов. Владельцу понадобится запастись терпением и скачать необходимые мобильные приложения — найти удалённые фотки и видео теоретически можно и «вручную», однако гораздо проще и результативнее будет сделать это с помощью специальных средств.


Удобное, не занимающее много места в памяти телефона приложение; работать с ним куда проще, чем найти лучший антивирус для Андроида. Для восстановления фото и изображений не требуется прав доступа к корневой папке. Их наличие, разумеется, будет плюсом; однако владелец устройства, не желающий модифицировать свой Самсунг, Сяоми или Леново, может со спокойным сердцем пользоваться «базовыми» опциями.

Чтобы вернуть удалённые с телефона на Андроиде фотографии с помощью DiskDigger, нужно:

Скачать и запустить программу. Владелец телефона на Андроиде без рут-прав может сразу тапать по самой верхней кнопке «Начать простой поиск изображений».

Если же root на смартфоне или планшете есть, но в главном окне программы указывается на отсутствие возможности доступа к корневой папке, стоит попробовать обновить данные, воспользовавшись иконкой вверху.

Довольно долгое время пользователь, желающий восстановить удалённые фото непосредственно на телефоне, будет замечать, что никаких найденных файлов не отображается; это нормально — стоит немного подождать.

Или ускорить процесс, тапнув по пиктограмме шестерёнки, задать параметры поиска: размер фотографии или изображения и крайние даты удаления — выбрать их можно, нажав на кнопку с тремя горизонтально расположенными точками и указав соответствующие дни в системном календаре.

В итоге на экране начнут появляться эскизы фоток. Если нужных пока нет, можно дождаться завершения поиска.

Или, если требуемые картинки обнаружены, нажать на «Паузу» вверху окна.

Если планируется восстановить все найденные фото, следует вызвать выпадающее меню, нажав на три горизонтально размещённые точки в правом верхнем углу экрана, и тапнуть по строчке «Выбрать всё».

Если только некоторые — установить галочки в чекбоксах, находящихся в левом верхнем углу каждого обнаруженного изображения, и тапнуть по кнопке «Восстановление».

Теперь пользователю будет предложено на выбор несколько вариантов сохранения восстановленных фоток. Так, выбрав в диалоговом окошке новую строчку, он может.

Отправить фотографии сам себе на электронную почту или в одном из установленных на телефоне мессенджеров для Андроида.

Чтобы сохранить найденные фото в каталоге внутренней или внешней памяти смартфона или планшета, следует выбрать нажатием вторую строчку.

Выбрать основной путь.

И конкретную папку на устройстве.

Об окончании восстановления фотографий и картинок владельца телефона известит всплывающее окошко.

По окончании процесса, чтобы удалить теперь уже точно ненужный мусор, достаточно тапнуть по находящейся в нижней части главного окна программы кнопке Wipe Free Space — следовать дальнейшим инструкциям не сложнее, чем найти потерянный телефон.

Photo Recovery

Эта программа для телефона на Андроиде также проста в использовании, минималистична и нетребовательна к наличию рут-прав. Чтобы восстановить удалённые фото с помощью Photo Recovery, нужно:

Скачать и запустить приложение, после чего, ознакомившись с условиями пользования, нажать на кнопку Let’s Start.

Выбрать язык интерфейса — к сожалению, русского в настоящее время не предусмотрено.

Если root на телефоне не установлен, тапнуть по размещённой слева кнопке Quick Scan.

И подождать несколько минут, пока мобильное приложение для Андроида найдёт все недавно удалённые на телефоне фотки. Теперь, нажав на кнопку Show.

Пользователь увидит список обнаруженных каталогов с фотографиями и изображения. Здесь он может выбрать для восстановления все папки.

Или, зайдя в нужную, просмотреть находящиеся в них фотки.

И отметить галочками нужные.

Воспользовавшись кнопкой Restore, владелец смартфона или планшета на Андроиде восстановит выбранные данные. Чтобы просмотреть их, достаточно нажать на большую круглую кнопку в центре нового окна.

Для представления картинок используется системный проводник, что обычно не слишком удобно.

Чтобы удостовериться, что восстановлены нужные картинки, и удалить случайно «возвращённые» лишние, рекомендуется воспользоваться любым сторонним продуктом для просмотра данных — все фотки будут размещены во внутренней памяти телефона в каталоге Restored Photos.

I’m happy to announce that DiskDigger for Android now supports recovering HEIF images (High Efficiency Image Format), as well as HEVC videos. The upcoming release of Android P is planned to support saving photos from the camera using the new HEIF format, and DiskDigger is now ready to recover them in case they are accidentally deleted.

  • Recovering HEIF images is supported in the Basic scan as well as the Full scan. However, the Basic scan is only able to recover these types of images from your device’s thumbnail cache. The Full scan, which can detect HEIF images throughout your device’s internal memory, the device must be rooted.
  • You can use DiskDigger to recover HEIF images from any version of Android (not just Android P). However, the app can only display previews of HEIF images when running in Android 8 (Oreo) or above.

DiskDigger for Windows, on the other hand, has already been able to recover HEIF images for a while now. If your Android device uses a microSD card for storing photos or videos, it’s recommended to remove the card and connect it to your PC using a card reader, and scan it using the Windows version of DiskDigger.

Настройка программы DiskDigger

Программа  имеет русский язык. Способна восстановить удаленные файлы, будь то у Вас жесткий диск, карта памяти или иной носитель информации. Установка Disk Digger у Вас не должна вызвать проблем. Выбираете место куда нужно установить программу и всё. А вот где взять ключ и приобрести лицензию я Вам сейчас наглядно расскажу. Для этого запускаем утилиту и попадаем на главное окно:

Как видим, утилита является незарегистрированной версией. Но это не надолго… Для регистрации программы жмем «О программе» или «Далее» и появится окно для ввода ключа.

Ключ к утилите disk digger для компьютера находится в архиве. 

Свернув программу, запускаем keygen для генерации ключа и жмем «Generate». 

Затем копируем генерированный ключ и вставляем в поле «регистрационный ключ»  

И теперь утилита disk digger взломана и зарегистрирована, о чем внизу будет указано! 

Итак, можно переходить к восстановлению удаленных файлов. Выбираем носитель, на котором нужно найти удаленные файлы и нажимаем «Далее». Для примера я подключил через кабель USB свой старый смартфон Nokia N86. Встроенный массив памяти на 8 Гб я давно отформатировал в файловую систему NTFS и использую его как флешку.

Теперь указываем глубину поиска стертых файлов и жмем далее 

Ждем некоторое время, пока программа будет искать удаленную информацию 

По окончанию выскочит окно с количеством найденных файлов 

Жмем «Ок» и в появившемся списке найденных и удаленных данных выбираем необходимые файлы. В окне справа можно просмотреть информацию о выбранном файлике, правда, если это возможно.

После выбора кликаем правой кнопкой мыши, либо кнопку «Сохранить выбранные файлы»:

Далее выбираем место, куда необходимо сохранить файлы.

После чего увидим процесс восстановления/сохранения

Starting the App

Using DiskDigger for Android is very simple. After launching the app, it will display two options: «Basic scan» and «Full scan.» The «full» scan functionality is available only on rooted devices, whereas the «basic» functionality is available regardless of whether your device is rooted.

If your device is rooted, the app should allow you to select the memory partition to scan. Your device’s internal memory usually appears as «/data», and the device’s SD card usually appears as «/mnt/sdcard» or something similar.

If your device is not rooted, tap the «Start basic photo scan» button to continue, and continue to the «Scanning for files» section below.

When you use the app on a rooted device, you may see a Superuser request window. Make sure to press «Allow» in order to grant DiskDigger root access.

After you select the memory device to scan, you will select the types of files that you’d like to recover. For better performance, please select only the file types that you actually need.

Time for another excellent update to DiskDigger for Windows, as well as the DiskDigger app for Android. Here’s what’s new in this release of the Windows version:
